Promoting Open Educational Resources

The Library supported two faculty members in developing successful applications to the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program. A team from the University of Maryland, College Park from the Biocomputational Engineering program at USG received a Create OER grant to create a course ENBC321: Machine Learning for Data Analysis, incorporating open educational resources (OERs) into it. A faculty member from the University of Maryland, Baltimore Nursing program also received a Create OER grant to develop the first three chapters of an open textbook titled “The Health Informatics Guide: A Beginner’s Guide to Systems Thinking in a Digital Age.” Each chapter will include an overview of the essential topic being covered, appropriate learning objectives, additional text, hyperlinks, tutorials, or multimedia resources to help guide readers, and will conclude with a practice exercise. Librarians will collaborate with the faculty as they implement these projects.

For both of these courses, textbooks that cover their course content at a level for undergraduates remain scant so these new resources fill a gap. Also, with the rising cost of textbooks, OERs provide economic relief to students already struggling to cover the costs of their course materials. In addition, because of the adaptability and flexibility of OERs, faculty can modify them to better reflect the experiences and diversity of USG students than many traditional textbooks do.

Developing Future Professionals

Andrew Yager and Franklin Ofsthun were honored by UMD Libraries with the FY22 Spirit of Innovation Award. This award recognizes library employees who implement an innovative program, project, or service that had a positive impact on Library operations. Andrew and Franklin were recognized for their work on the Priddy Library’s student employment program, which emphasizes professional development and career preparation to benefit both student employees and the library.

Strongly Supporting Students

Greta Ober received the 2022 Kendall Award for Outstanding Service to Students. The Kendall Awards recognize faculty, program leaders, and staff who have provided outstanding support to students, as well as staff who have demonstrated exemplary service to the USG community.  The Outstanding Service to Students Award is awarded in recognition of a faculty or staff member who assumes responsibilities beyond the call of duty in order to provide high-quality support services and advocates for improvement in services that directly benefit current and/or future students.

Greta received nominations from faculty, students and staff, which are a testimony to how they have been positively impacted by her outstanding dedication and skills. “She is an excellent example of everything USG promises to be, whose efforts help all members of our community learn and develop knowledge."

Library Student Assistant Receives Student Leadership and Service Award

The Universities at Shady Grove honors seniors from undergraduate programs for their outstanding academic achievements, drive to excel outside of the classroom, and commitment to serving the community. Laura DeMarco, one of the library’s exemplary student workers, was one of two recipients of this award for 2022. We are very proud of her and delighted to see her pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.
